Back in action… loosely enough October 4, 2008

Hey all!

I thought I might as well prove I’m still alive here. I bet wordpress is getting an itchy trigger finger for deleting me from inactivity, right?

Well, here’s somewhat of a plan I have for getting things done.

I’m rewriting my brush code for my paint program… it’s pretty hilarious to think this way, but I thought I’ll turn my stroke buffer into a parallel datastructure using TBB (threading building blocks). It’s ridiculously easy to do with that library, and you can’t argue with the license. Free is free is free.

I’ll do what I can to give up details on that without giving out too much particular intellectual info. That is, I want to help others start using this library. I might even make an expansion on a structure and post it here.

Also, I’m still in the process of adding adobe’s GIL to the project. Who knows, maybe they’ll like my project enough to give me a few features I might ask of them (More details on that later)

All in all, someone at the arts department at USF seems interested in the project enough that I’ve got a tremendous amount of steam pumped back into the whole thing. I might publish an svn view here if anyone wants to get an idea of how much work I have ahead of me… and lordy, if anyone wants to help me with windows coding, that’d be great. I have OSX leopard and XP, but no vista. And I’m not about to try to install that monster on any of our home computers.

Also, I’m investigating the possibilities of making my first networking module based on SCTP… and later doing a UDP version. TCP is going to be a little… too wonky in some circumstances, so I need to reengineer the brush stroke adapter classes so that I can more easily send a ’stream’ of stroke data. The format right now is very much chunk oriented, and using TCP will put a lot of zaniness on the client (the server always has it easy with just memcpy and wot-not).

Hoody hoo! back to work! I’m learning more about SQL and I might also be learning flash very soon. Again. *sigh*

Blargh April 30, 2007

So, a lot of things have happened. The jist of it is as follows:

While I’m once again unsure of how college might go, my summer looks to be more free than normal. I didn’t get accepted into the SoC, but that doesn’t keep me from learning how to code for blender anyhow. I simply love that program too much, and it keeps deciding to compile from cvs on my mac. Who can say no to that? I mean, when something compiles frequently, you just have to suddenly start tweaking a little here and there with it.

Anyways, one fellow is going to be coding an update to the renderer. I want to see if I can help out, and also I’ll just sit back and wait for a better opportunity to do my brdf/SSS ray-tracing shader. I really need to get a life, but so help me, I still have no one around in the summer, so I pretty much do stuff like this or die of boredom.

So yeah. I’m currently messing around with blender here and there and actually am still working on that dragon animation project. Perhaps I’ll post more progress pictures here as they come up. This year still has a lot of kick left in it, but yeah… wow… currently the world has regarded me as a hopeless wreck (speaking of my GPA, people’s expressions at my visions of what I’ll do in the future, and generally how I’m trying to get into neuroscience). Wonderful. And you know what, I find myself starting to agree in a laughing, humoring manner. This provides me with the most awkward introspect on my career ever. That is, I believe it’s worse than what most other people who have had such trouble could have ever felt.

Oh well. I sure am having fun. At the cost of respect that really has been flaky to begin with.

GLFW, fast subsurface scattering, and SoC March 18, 2007

Filed under: Graphics, Life in General — dudymas @ 7:32 pm

I’ve said before I’m crazy. Now I’m feeling worse… like something indescribably nuts. Here’s the lay low:

I planned originally on doing a recode/stabilization of verse for blender 2.44 and yet now I’ve seen that it’s more than likely out of my league. My plans now are to mess with sss since my computer graphics class requires me to anyways, and come up with a novel approach to solving the re-emittance of light through scattering under a surface and hopefully apply it within the constraints of a summer to blender. I think if I even get half-way done, it’d be more than awesome, so I’m gun-ho for attacking the challenge.

GLFW was recently suggested to me as a solution to threading problems I’ve had with GLUT (since GLUT and GL normally have a lot of funky behaviors normally enough, let alone with threads). I mostly want to throw out some threads and not worry about who does what, as long as only one is allowed to render and the others play fair with physics calculations. You simply can’t do that with GLUT. It wants only a specific context per thread (GL, as a matter of fact, requires that… not specifically GLUT… but GLUT doesn’t handle the problem). It looks like GLFW is developed by someone who wants just about the same stuff out of a computer as I do. Nimble… open… who cares as long as it works and it’s stable?

Yeah… I’m not a class AAA picture perfect programmer… but I’m going to get some junk done. I hope you’ll enjoy the updates as I continue to work on blender and ray-tracing and give you some reviews and tuts on using GLFW. At least, I hope I’ll manage to do that for you people. We’ll see.

for those very small portions of people who actually do consider me someone they prefer to track… uh, I’ll at least post here that I’m taking 19 credits this semester, and that has put a huge damper on all my activities. I’ll try to post a few more WIP’s here, but I really want to finish a huge load of stuff and then post a nice big gob of joy. Back to work for me (and opengl has been going well for me… I might be learning GLSL soon)

I went through here and put in a bunch of ‘more’ tags to make the pages load easier. I have someone to blame for putting this to my attention (that was the best prepositional phrase I ever made). All you need to know is that it was a woman. They’re mean that way… helping people out when they didn’t deserve it. Darnit… evil women.

Ahhhh! I’m crazy again! October 31, 2006

So. I’ve taken learning hebrew personally. I have a hebrew tech podcast I want to understand by the end of the semester, I have a programming project that will require me actually giving myself reading assignments. Good grief. Where have I been?

So yeah. More sketching and painting. I’m buying Art Rage, so expect to see a bunch of fun things along the line of that soon.

Work work work March 22, 2006

Okay then. I will definitely need to put up the hiatus stamp for a week and a half. Expect that Friday next week I should be back on track. Let’s just say I have a LOT of work to do. A lot a lot. And a lot.

Internin’ again March 19, 2006

Filed under: Academia, Life in General — dudymas @ 8:53 pm

SweeeT! I gots muh internship. It’ll prolly involve some crazy computer science and neuroscience jazz.

ALSO! Me getting money = world devestation + me buying a mac dual core

I totally love the idea of getting a dual core and doing my music and whatnot on it. Then hopefully I’ll get nix on it for the perfect programming nuttiness environment.

Sorry tho, folks. I sure to have a lot to do this week upcoming. I may still yet have to put off sketches. BE SURE that I willllll do dem. It just takes a while or two (too? to? tu?)

Oy… I guess I should go ahead and just say that I’m going through a strange phase of trying to give myself new tools to annihilate my academic foes in the learning world. (more…)
